And here we are with our 100th issue. We have written and compiled during these hundred issues, and hesitated a lot about whether a news story would make it into the newsletter; we were shared and grew together. Thank you so much for being with us on this journey. Hoping to meet many more "hundreds" together.

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced greenhouse gas emission data for 2022. During this period, the largest share in total emissions in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent was energy-related emissions with 71.8%, followed by agriculture with 12.8%, industrial processes and product use with 12.5%, and the waste sector with 2.9%. While total greenhouse gas emissions per person were 4.1 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 1990, it was calculated as 6.8 tons in 2021 and 6.6 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022. Thus, in 2022, total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous year, reaching 558.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. DETAIL
Russia’s war in Ukraine has resulted in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 175 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, a group of climate experts has estimated. The extra warming from these emissions will lead to an additional $32 billion of damages from extreme weather around the world. Ukraine intends to add these climate-related costs to the list of damages for which it says Russia is responsible, and for which it will demand compensation. DETAIL

With just five months to go before this year's U.N. climate summit, countries cannot agree on the size of a global funding bill to help the developing world fight climate change - let alone how to split it. The decision is set to dominate the COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan in November, where nearly 200 countries need to agree on a new annual financing target for helping poorer countries cut their emissions and protect their societies in a harsher, hotter world. DETAIL
The lower house of the Swiss parliament voted to reject a ruling ordering Switzerland to do more to combat global warming in a move that could encourage others to resist the influence of international courts. In April, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg issued an unprecedented judgment that said Bern had violated the human rights of a group of older Swiss women, the KlimaSeniorinnen, by failing to tackle climate change. The European Union is ill-prepared to implement the bloc's new law aimed at banning the import of commodities and related goods linked to deforestation, an EU grain trade association said on Tuesday. DETAIL

Scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are working on a solution. They have discovered a new antibiotic, called lolamicin, that can hone in on gram-negative pathogens while leaving other microbes alone. DETAIL
A Chinese doctor conducted a groundbreaking surgery utilizing a unique machine, allowing instantaneous operation on a patient in Beijing from Rome. DETAIL
Electrically stimulating the muscles of people who've had a stroke while they do rehab exercises improves their arm movements, a small trial has found. DETAIL
Scientists at the University of Southern California (USC) have created an AI-driven system that precisely tracks tiny ingestible devices designed to monitor disease markers in the gut. It can transform gastrointestinal (GI) tract health monitoring by enabling individuals to track their health at home simply through smartphones. DETAIL

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference was remarkable. The company had a lot of news, the biggest of which was its push into artificial intelligence, called Apple Intelligence. It also announced that users can tap into OpenAI's ChatGPT when using Siri, but only if a user wants to. For further news, tap the link below and watch the video. DETAIL

Researchers from The University of Texas at Dallas and Seoul National University have developed an imager chip inspired by Superman's X-ray vision that could be used in mobile devices to make it possible to detect objects inside packages or behind walls. DETAIL
Nokia just announced that it has made the first-ever audio and video call using 3D spatial audio. This is actually a big deal, as all phone calls currently made over a cellular network are monophonic, so there’s no possibility for spatial audio. DETAIL
Using sensors and on-device models, Android can detect your phone being snatched out of your hand and the thief running, biking, or running away with it. Theft Detection Lock will simply lock your phone. Similarly, Offline Device Lock will kick in “if someone steals [your device] and turns off the internet” to prevent the thief from accessing other data. Finally, Remote Lock lets you lock a phone by calling a number and perform a security challenge. It’s meant to be faster than having to log-in to Find My Device on another computer. DETAIL
It might sound far-fetched, but psychological researchers claim to have found evidence that your name can determine the direction of your life. In a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers from the University of Utah took an analytical look at the theory of nominative determinism, a longstanding concept positing that your name has an uncanny influence over your career and life. Researchers at MIT have come up with a new way to store energy inside a modified concrete, a tantalizing potential solution to the looming energy storage problem. As the BBC reports, MIT researcher Damian Stefaniuk and his colleagues turned a mix of water, cement, and carbon black, a highly conductive material used in the manufacturing of car tires, into a supercapacitor. While supercapacitors aren't nearly as good at long-term energy storage compared to lithium-ion batteries, they can be charged and discharged very quickly, making them an intriguing complement to conventional batteries.
