Slovenian researchers are developing a new approach to cooling technology that offers a more sustainable way to stay cool in a warming world without relying on harmful refrigerants. While traditional refrigerants rely on change of state from liquid to gas and visa versa to power cooling, solid materials like a nickel-titanium alloy only require mechanical stress to do so, offering a sustainable alternative. Ancient Greek and Roman warships were equipped with bronze rams to smash and sink enemy vessels – and a team of archaeologists has just recreated one. They plan to test the weapon on replica warships to assess how effective the rams were during naval battles. “This research can help us understand the evolution of major warships, from the fleets of Alexander the Great’s successors to the vessels that secured Rome’s naval dominance,” says Stephen DeCasien at Dalian University of Technology in China. Houston-based Deployable Energy and Queensland’s ship design group Seatransport have announced a collaboration with Lloyd’s Register to develop nuclear power generation for shipping and more applications. The plan is to harness the power of micromodular reactor (MMR) tech for ships. The companies are planning to develop a 239-foot (73-meter) long rescue vessel, which will have two to five MMRs of 1 MWe (megawatt electric) capacity. The use of nuclear power for propulsion means that the vessel will be able to operate for up to 10 years without needing a refuel. This means it could stay at sea for extended durations for rescue missions and provide help to affected areas. DETAIL
